Becoming a parent is one of the biggest disruptions a person goes through. Poor sleep, zero personal time, a completely restructured daily rhythm — all of that is real, and none of it should be dismissed.
But here is what I tell new parents: two to three sessions per week, each under thirty minutes, is enough to maintain your fitness — provided you are not consistently overeating. That is less than ninety minutes a week. Almost everyone can find that window somewhere.
And if structured training genuinely feels impossible right now? Walk. Put the baby in the stroller and aim for 10,000 steps a day. It will not transform your body overnight, but it will keep you moving, manage your weight, and clear your head in ways that add up significantly over time.
The goal during this phase is not to be at your peak. It is not to lose years of progress.

3. Work Stress and Long Hours Are Quietly Winning
Chronic workplace stress is one of the most underrated contributors to weight gain. Elevated cortisol disrupts sleep, increases appetite — especially for high-calorie foods — and gradually kills the motivation to exercise. When you are burning out at work, training is usually the first thing to cut, and food quality is a close second.
What many people do not realize is that exercise is one of the most effective stress-relief tools available. A thirty-minute strength session or a run will reduce cortisol levels more reliably than another hour of work ever will.
A growing number of companies in Berlin now offer gym subsidies or sport allowances as part of their benefits. If yours does, use it. And if your commute is walkable or cyclable, that daily movement adds up faster than most people expect — without requiring a single extra hour in your schedule.
4. Overeating — The Thread Running Through Everything

Most people who gradually gain weight are not dramatically inactive. They are simply eating slightly more than they burn — consistently, over months and years. A small daily surplus, invisible in isolation, adds up to significant weight gain over time.
You do not need a perfect diet. You need an honest one. Track everything you eat for one week without changing anything. Most people are genuinely surprised by what they find. Awareness alone often shifts behavior more than any strict plan.
According to the World Health Organization, adults should aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity per week — and that works best alongside sustainable eating habits, not as a substitute for them.
