How Healthy Are We? Building a Healthy Lifestyle in Berlin

By srdjan · Fitness Mindset

Recently, I lost a close friend who was only 50 years old. He was one of the fittest people I knew. We had known each other for decades—we partied together when we were young, served in the military, and he was a guest at my wedding. While on holiday, he went for a swim after lunch, and within moments his heart stopped. Just like that, he was gone. News like this makes you stop and think. It forces you to ask yourself a difficult question: How healthy am I really? For anyone trying to build a healthy lifestyle in Berlin, these moments remind us that looking fit isn’t always the same as being healthy.

Most of us judge our health by what we see in the mirror. If we’re in good shape, exercise regularly, and don’t feel ill, we assume everything is fine. But real health goes much deeper than appearance. How healthy is your heart? What about your arteries, lungs, liver, or kidneys? Even regular check-ups cannot predict everything with complete certainty. Life is unpredictable, and that’s exactly why taking care of ourselves should never be something we postpone.

Despite what happened to my friend, I will always advocate for regular exercise and an active lifestyle. Sport won’t guarantee a long life, but it dramatically improves the quality of the life we have. Staying active benefits not only our physical health but also our mental wellbeing, confidence, productivity, and overall quality of life.

Some of the biggest benefits of regular exercise include:

  • Better cardiovascular health, increased energy, improved sleep, and a stronger immune system.
  • Lower stress levels, improved mental health, better focus at work, and greater self-confidence.

A Healthy Lifestyle in Berlin Starts Outdoors

One of the reasons I enjoy living in Berlin is that the city makes it incredibly easy to stay active. Whether you enjoy walking, running, cycling, calisthenics, swimming, or simply exploring new neighbourhoods, Berlin offers endless opportunities. Its parks, forests, lakes, bike paths, and outdoor fitness areas make exercise accessible to almost everyone, regardless of age or fitness level.

Yesterday I went for a walk through Park am Nordbahnhof. It was a beautiful afternoon, but one scene really caught my attention. Four teenagers were sitting on a wall, every one of them staring at a phone. None of them were talking or doing anything active. What struck me even more was that they all appeared to be overweight. It made me wonder how much has changed in just one generation. Today’s parks offer outdoor gyms, football pitches, basketball courts, climbing frames, skate parks and huge green spaces—far more facilities than we had growing up—yet many young people spend their time outside exactly as they do indoors: looking at a screen.

As expats, it’s easy to become trapped in routines filled with work, commuting, and everyday responsibilities. Exercise often becomes something we’ll “start next week.” But Berlin is one of the best cities in Europe for building an active lifestyle. You don’t need an expensive gym membership or fancy equipment. Sometimes all it takes is putting on a pair of trainers and walking out the front door.

If you’re living in Berlin, challenge yourself to:

  • Walk more, explore different neighbourhoods, visit the parks, cycle to work, or try one of the city’s outdoor workout parks.
  • Make movement part of your weekly routine instead of something you only do when you have spare time.

Building a healthy lifestyle in Berlin doesn’t require perfection. It starts with small, consistent habits that help you enjoy a healthier and more active life.
